What a vibrant, enticing reading!
And, yes, we’ve been graced with another spread featuring two major arcana cards. Clearly, the intensity isn’t done with us yet.
When I look at this spread, however, I see two themes coming into harmonious relationship. The topsy-turvy world of The Moon segueing into the seasonally-rooted lushness of The Empress. After a series of serious cards, this pair shows our path leveling out and leading us to the decisive authority of the King of Swords. In other words, this week holds the promise of a big breakthrough.
Our first stop is the outlandish terrain of The Moon, not exactly what you’d think would be leading us to clear-cut, swords-y knowledge. With this in mind, buckle in and appreciate the surreality of the beginning of the week. Don’t expect things to make sense just yet, follow your whims, explore whatever is emerging from your subconscious, and practice seeing confusion as the precursor to clarity.
I often think of The Moon as the major arcana manifestation of the Seven of Cups, a card that we had in our forecast two weeks ago. Look back to that time to see what possibilities you were exploring. It’s likely that you don’t have utter certainty or even a clear-cut path forward in those areas, but it’s possible that whatever plan or vision has stuck with you over the past two weeks is showing its importance by pestering you with questions and a general lack of direction.
As a major celestial force, my main strategy when approaching The Moon is to simply lean into it. Wondering, this week, is a spiritual practice, and it’s likely that some truly outlandish ideas and sparks of inspiration will arrive in your life from the most unusual places. As always, pay attention to your dreams, intuitive hits, and any synchronicities you encounter in the world around you.
The Moon can also have destabilizing effect, as if we’re suddenly walking on its surface and subject to a completely different gravitational field. Yet all the floating we do in the beginning of the week ultimately deposits us in the earthly abundance of The Empress. The word that comes through for me most powerfully when I look at this card in our reading is comfort. And I don’t know about you, but comfort has most certainly not been the overarching energy of the past few months.
It may be that something in the middle of the week - whether it’s a specific event or simply the result of a lot of practice finally coalescing into hard-earned ease - has us feeling at home in ourselves, connected to both the world around us and our own sovereign power. This is not an experience to take lightly! In fact, the challenge of The Empress can often be to take your comfort, allure, abundance, and connection to nature/spirituality/emotion seriously. Don’t shrink yourself! In fact, it might be very hard to shrink yourself even if you try, so enjoy experiences that have you interfacing with the world around you: people, beautiful places, family, friends, and animals.
I’m seeing this card as a beautiful moment of restoration after some pretty austere soul-searching (and grueling/rewarding work in our everyday lives). Be sure to look around and appreciate just how much you’ve been growing while tending to these bigger questions. This is an excellent time to inject some celebratory decadence into your life. Symbolically spruce up a corner of your house, dress in your favorite finery, enjoy a delicious meal with people you love. As a card tied to cycles, it’s also possible that The Empress is showing us a moment where we can put a period at the end of a sentence, marking the conclusion of some path of growth. Do this, feel your strength, appreciate the world you care about and that cares for you, and allow yourself to rest before the next phase begins.
Speaking of the next phase, we have a rather remarkable card closing out our reading. The King of Swords joins ranks with our two central cards for May, the Page of Swords and Queen of Swords. I’m seeing this as an influx of decisive energy or piece of information that inspires our decisive energy; notice where you feel the clouds receding and your vision sharpening.
Most importantly, trust that you are equipped and capable of making a decision. It’s likely that the end of the week will call on us to rise to some occasion (or multiple). Hopefully well-rested and inspired from our sojourn in The Empress and adept at navigating chaos, confusion, and inspiration after our trip to The Moon, we’re able to trust our capabilities and do what we need to do.
Because The King of Swords forms a complete pair with our environment card for May, The Queen of Swords, I’m also sensing that some form of approval is arriving on the scene that gives us comfort and energy to commit to the next steps, as if both parents are giving the Page of Swords their blessing. This may come from within, from a person in your life, or some swords-y information that feels empowering and compelling. Whatever it is, we end the week with a newfound sense of power and possibility. Wherever we choose to go next, we’ll be acute and aware, clear-eyed and ready for change.
Embrace:
Leaning into confusion, outlandish ideas, avant-garde anything at the beginning of the week
Seeing enduring questions or a lack of clarity around a project, vision, or plan as a sign it’s important
Sensuality, celebratory decadence, enjoyment, pleasure - all The Empress-y things
Fierce protection of what matters to you (The Empress can signify moments when we’re blessed with easeful boundary-setting, well-timed comebacks, and refreshing conviction about what does and does not work for us)
Making decisions! Trusting your thoughts and perceptions! Reveling in the sharpness of your intellect! when the King of Swords comes onto the scene at the end of the week
Avoid:
Nay-sayers, people with a lack of vision, control masked as concern
Freaking out when you’re dreaming big, still figuring things out, or getting lost in the ether - we’re coming back down to earth soon!
Limiting messages about power, agency, pleasure, and justice
Capitulating to others’ timeframes, expectations, and preferences
Relinquishing your power to decide, second-guessing your convictions, waiting until later to do something you really want and believe in
