This is a fun coincidence, dear readers! I used this deck - The Spolia Tarot, one of my favorites - for last week’s reading and it’s been sitting on my table ever since. So naturally I decided to use it this morning. As much as I love the traditional Rider-Waite-Smith, sometimes a tarot reader needs a change!
I forgot, however, that this deck has a few extra cards: twelve for each sign of the zodiac, plus another four for the elements. Usually I remove any zodiac cards I pull and draw another. (Despite being active in woo circles, I don’t work with astrology personally or professionally, although I love learning about it from others.) But what would you know? The zodiac card we have this week is Gemini, appearing on the exact start date of Gemini season: May 20.
I’m taking this as a cosmic underline for the week. Combined with the fiery splendor of our first card, the Ace of Wands, and we have a massive “tarot green light". What do you want to accomplish this week? What idea, plan, or vision has been lighting you up?
Not only does our Ace of Wands + Gemini pair suggest that whatever we initiate this week will expand delightfully throughout this astrological season, the Ace of Wands also tells us that our efforts will be met with a response from the world, either in the form of an opportunity now or recognition later down the line.
Either way, our world is being illuminated and the work we do in the following days - the gestures we make towards growing, illuminating, and uplifting whatever it is we choose to pursue - has huge potential to invite the changes and responses we’ve been seeking. However, like any ace, there’s a joyful trickiness afoot: whatever happens, it will expand beyond our current vision of what’s possible. So, dive into making your dream real while embracing that it will grow beyond the boundaries of your imagination.
Our North Star this week is, fittingly, The Star. Pay special attention to what makes you feel good; not in a hedonistic way, but in a slow, deeply sustaining way that brings you closer to yourself. Meaningless action will fizzle and plans that uphold another person’s expectations won’t gel. The Star asks us to be vulnerable and know who we are so that we can bring our gifts forward. When we act from this place, our work shines outward with bright steadiness.
Looking at these cards, it’s clear that illumination is a central theme for this week. For the Ace of Wands, it’s vibrant and galvanizing. What do you feel irresistibly compelled to do? If we navigate the coming days using The Star, this fiery brightness can be tempered into something sustainable and lasting. This is not a time to be shy, slow, or subtle so long as you’re guided by the care and self-knowledge. Since we’ve had this card in several readings somewhat recently, its presence here is more of a reminder than a novel suggestion. Steer towards what matters, but trust in the instinctive power of the Ace of Wands. If you know what you want, now is the time to go and get it.
Potential surprise/reframe:
We’ve had a similar theme in past readings about learning to balance our energetic output in the world with self-care and self-reflection. Think, tempering the fieriness of wands and their themes of ambition, action, and growth with the soothing dedication of The Star. Seeing this reappear in our reading, but with a trio of powerful cards that could easily stand on their own, makes me think that this week is the time for us to put our skills into action. The practice phase is over. We know what to do. So buckle down into your self-care routine and strike out into the world. And don’t forget to report back and share your accomplishments!
This week, embrace:
Your instincts, passions, and ambition
Moving quickly, flexibly, following what gives you energy
Sudden insights, ideas, solutions, and plans
Living loudly, shining brightly, going after what you want
Actions that uphold your values, feed your life, and that radiate outwards to help or guide others
This week, avoid:
Getting bogged down in details, overthinking, keeping to yourself
Using practicality as an excuse
Frenetic activity with no goal (the downside of wands energy!)
Letting in distracting information or input that distances you from your desires and values
